Pink Sky in the Morning

"Pink sky in the morning, sailor's warning, pink sky at night, sailor's delight." That's what my mother always used to say. I thought of that yesterday morning, when the news predicted that a bad storm was on its way. It was going to blow lots of goods off the shelves, leaving them empty. Trump said that we will not be able to buy our kids thirty dolls. "He just doesn't get it" I thought. "We're not worried about buying dolls for our kids, we're worried about putting food on the table!" We are promised that it will get better but there is no specificity about whether that will take two weeks or two years.

Life is Full of Miracles

What is the message of Easter - that even death cannot destroy us? That this short life, with all of it's pain and destruction, is only a small part of our soul's journey?  That there is hope for everyone suffering right now? Romans 6:5-11 tells us that it is so. "For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his."

No More Death

It was Holy Saturday - two days after my visit to the mountain at night, when I revealed the dark place in my heart that asks "What if this short life is all that there is?" I was standing on the road looking up at the mountain, at the place where I had been two nights before, now visible in daylight. I suddenly began to think about the end times, the resurrection of us all, and the words in Revelation 21:4 - "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."  The thought then suddenly came to me, "Someday the only things that will be dead are your doubts."  I had profound thoughts, but not that profound! That had to be the Lord's response to my questions.

What if This is All That There Is?

"So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit." John 19:30. Traditionally, when we get to that part in the reading of the gospel on Good Friday, everyone kneels and there is complete silence in the church. I guess we are supposed to be sad, but all I can feel at that point is relief. The suffering that he had dreaded for so long was over. It was behind him. He would never have to worry about it again.

The Agony Before the Garden

Recall the last time you had an event approaching that you were really nervous about. It could have been a medical procedure, a speech or presentation, or a difficult exam. When did you first start worrying about that event? Did the anxiety only begin the night before? Someone once said that people put to death have to undergo their execution hundreds of times in their imaginations before the real thing actually happens. Jesus knew he was going to die long before it happened. He predicted his death at least three times in the gospels. The first time was right after he fed the multitudes. How long did he know about his death before he even said anything? So, as we begin to reflect on the passion, let's not forget about when the agony really began. How long was he carrying the weight of the cross within his heart before he actually had to take it upon his shoulders?

I began Lent with a reflection that started with a quote from a character played by Gene Hackman. "I see two men - the man that you are and the man that you ought to be. Someday those two will meet." As we approach the end of Lent, I wonder if maybe, just maybe, for a large part of the United States - that day could be today.

They then ask you for several favors and before you have the chance to respond, they say goodbye, get up and walk out.

Reverend Thompson almost hit the ceiling when he got a text from his teenage son's teacher, Mrs. Patterson, one Monday afternoon. His son, Jimmy, had apparently started a pattern of being disruptive in class, frequently sassing the teacher and muttering things under his breath when her back was turned. "This is absolutely unacceptable." He said to Jimmy. "Your teachers deserve your attention and respect. Now, if you talk back to her one more time this week, you can forget about going on that camping trip this weekend." That really got Jimmy's attention. The camping trip his father was referring to was a trip he had been invited to attend with his friend's family. It was something that happened only once a year and he looked forward to the event all year.  He just couldn't miss out on the trip, so he decided to behave himself in school.

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you." You don't need to take a course in Criminal Justice to learn your Miranda rights. You just have to be a member of the first American generation to grow up in front of the TV. After a lifetime of cop shows, lawyer shows and TV movies, you sort of get the idea. You have rights!

Well, its here - Liberation Day, but liberation for whom? Is it Liberation Day for the American People, most of whom are already living from paycheck to paycheck, struggling to pay bills, and will have to pay more? Is it Liberation Day for the people of other countries who will have to pay higher tariffs? You say that we have to endure short-term pain for a long-term gain, but what exactly is "short-term pain"? How long will it take for some of us to be completely ruined? Is it Liberation Day for anyone but one power-hungry man seeking to be freed from the inability to wreak havoc across the globe?

The Exact Nature of Our Wrongs

"You can't handle the truth." Is that what we are being told? There was a lot of talk about truth in the news this week. It began with a breach from the government about war plans against Yemen that got accidentally leaked to a reporter. The people looked for accountability, responsibility and a rectification of the situation. The government acted like they were making a big deal out of nothing and instead of focusing on themselves, talked about the mistakes of former leaders. Then came the threat toward history and art museums - to remove their funding if they did not remove material that was divisive and might result in national shame. Is this the same system that expects us to tell "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but he truth" as a witness in court?
