A God Who Will End Slavery

19 Jun 2025 23:31

"Show me a God who will end slavery and I will believe in him." That is what a slave named Kizzie said in the mini-series, "Roots", based on the book by Alex Haley about the lives of his ancestors.

Power Over Fear

9 Jun 2025 02:57

We recently celebrated the miracle of Pentecost. When God came into the world as Jesus, he could only be seen and heard by a limited number of people at the same time. When He came into the world as the Holy Spirit, He could be with all people simultaneously at all times. The Holy Spirit was a power force, giving the apostles everything they needed to go out and spread the faith. The spirit removed all barriers - including the language barrier - between them and the people. Every culture and nationality could hear and understand the story they had to tell. None of them were required to enroll in any language courses and study for years to become fluent in them. But more powerful than that was the removal of fear.

God's Compromised Children

5 Jun 2025 22:52

Mahatma Ghandi said, "The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats it's most vulnerable members." We generally think that that means that a leader has a responsibility to see that his vulnerable citizens are treated with compassion. What happens when the leader becomes one of the most vulnerable members? Are the citizens responsible for making sure that he gets treated with compassion?

Final Destination

28 May 2025 22:44

Tomorrow my church is celebrating the Ascension of Jesus into heaven forty days after his resurrection from the dead. He tells his disciples that if they love him, they will be happy that he is going to the father. He tells them to wait for the Holy Spirit to come to them. He instructs them to make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the son and the Holy Spirit. He promises that he will be with them until the end of time. He blesses them and rises into heaven, where he takes a seat at the right hand of his father, probably after an incredible exchange of loving greetings. An angel comes down to assure the disciples that they will see him coming in the same way that they saw him go.

Pink Sky in the Morning

2 May 2025 12:22

"Pink sky in the morning, sailor's warning, pink sky at night, sailor's delight." That's what my mother always used to say. I thought of that yesterday morning, when the news predicted that a bad storm was on its way. It was going to blow lots of goods off the shelves, leaving them empty. Trump said that we will not be able to buy our kids thirty dolls. "He just doesn't get it" I thought. "We're not worried about buying dolls for our kids, we're worried about putting food on the table!" We are promised that it will get better but there is no specificity about whether that will take two weeks or two years.

Life is Full of Miracles

26 Apr 2025 00:45

What is the message of Easter - that even death cannot destroy us? That this short life, with all of it's pain and destruction, is only a small part of our soul's journey?  That there is hope for everyone suffering right now? Romans 6:5-11 tells us that it is so. "For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his."

No More Death

21 Apr 2025 01:23

It was Holy Saturday - two days after my visit to the mountain at night, when I revealed the dark place in my heart that asks "What if this short life is all that there is?" I was standing on the road looking up at the mountain, at the place where I had been two nights before, now visible in daylight. I suddenly began to think about the end times, the resurrection of us all, and the words in Revelation 21:4 - "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."  The thought then suddenly came to me, "Someday the only things that will be dead are your doubts."  I had profound thoughts, but not that profound! That had to be the Lord's response to my questions.

What if This is All That There Is?

18 Apr 2025 23:20

"So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit." John 19:30. Traditionally, when we get to that part in the reading of the gospel on Good Friday, everyone kneels and there is complete silence in the church. I guess we are supposed to be sad, but all I can feel at that point is relief. The suffering that he had dreaded for so long was over. It was behind him. He would never have to worry about it again.

The Servant Leader

18 Apr 2025 12:32

"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." John 13:14-15

The Agony Before the Garden

16 Apr 2025 22:51

Recall the last time you had an event approaching that you were really nervous about. It could have been a medical procedure, a speech or presentation, or a difficult exam. When did you first start worrying about that event? Did the anxiety only begin the night before? Someone once said that people put to death have to undergo their execution hundreds of times in their imaginations before the real thing actually happens. Jesus knew he was going to die long before it happened. He predicted his death at least three times in the gospels. The first time was right after he fed the multitudes. How long did he know about his death before he even said anything? So, as we begin to reflect on the passion, let's not forget about when the agony really began. How long was he carrying the weight of the cross within his heart before he actually had to take it upon his shoulders?

Fighting for Our Brother

16 Apr 2025 21:23

I began Lent with a reflection that started with a quote from a character played by Gene Hackman. "I see two men - the man that you are and the man that you ought to be. Someday those two will meet." As we approach the end of Lent, I wonder if maybe, just maybe, for a large part of the United States - that day could be today.
